CANONXF605
If you desperately need to get the footage out right away, the XF605 is compatible with Canon’s new Content Transfer Mobile app, which allows editing of metadata pre- and post-capture. It imports the footage from camera to smartphone, for instant transfer to broadcast station servers. Canon really has made a camcorder for the brave new world of instant broadcast. Streaming doesn’t require the highest quality, unlike editing in post. Here, you want the best – and the XF605 is a great performer. At the time of testing, not all NLEs could handle the new file format, but DaVinci Resolve did. Files looked natural, with bright but realistic colours. Log footage retained detail, with little noise in shadow areas – especially considering the sensor isn’t full-frame, dual ISO. Getting cinematically shallow depth-of-field is always tricky with a camcorder that has a fixed lens. But it was easy on the Canon, especially wide open on a long lens. It won’t match the wafer-thin depth-of-field of a large-sensor camera, but that’s not the point. This is a modern workhorse for a jobbing video shooter, with great AF and image stabilisation, wide zoom range, fine images out of camera, and lots of the right connections. In all those areas, it’s a winner.

THE VERDICT If you want a camera to shoot your next Hollywood epic, the XF605 probably isn’t it. But, if you are a working professional who needs an all-round camera that shoots great quality in 4K, the new Canon could be ideal. It can shoot top-class movies with the minimum of fuss. And it fits into pretty much any modern workflow situation, so you’ll never have to turn down a job because your kit can’t handle it. It can livestream events, be used for traditional broadcast, record high-quality 4K for post-event editing – and even send footage to your phone for upload to an FTP server. And this is possible fromwhatever location you find yourself in. The Dual Pixel AF makes a massive difference. Because of it, the XF605 can be used as an autofocus camera – for many, this is worth the asking price alone. It
is affordable, light and compact. We reckon it’s the flagship Canon XF in all but name.
