Reach dizzying new lights with the latest LEDs – create everything from a dramatic look, to a soft and flattering wash of colour L ighting has moved on a long way since red-hot Tungstens were a burn hazard on every set and all gaffers had huge swathes of coloured gels. approximating daylight. Smaller, or more focused lights give harder, crisper light, made for backgrounds or hair lights. There isn’t one universal approach. We try out some of the best and newest products on the market, from a soft light that can come over all hard, a pocket-size LED that packs a punch, a useful tube light, and a couple of round fixtures with a whole bag of tricks up their sleeves.

With one of these RGBWW lights, you can create washes of dreamy light to flatter skin tones, but also use bright colours for effects. The most high-tech lights have special effects built in, so you can recreate things like police emergency lights, lightning flashes and paparazzi flashguns. Most filmmakers know large light sources provide softer, more flattering illumination – ideal for portraits or
