CLOUD COMPUTING
has largely been picked up by corporate clients, who like its simplicity and accessibility through any browser – needing only limited bandwidth to work. Although there is an option to integrate with industry-standard NLEs like Adobe Premiere Pro, it has not yet found widespread acceptance within professional filmmaking circles. A more robust solution for independent creators is the 3XS Cloud vGPU system from Scan Business. This is designed to cope with high-end workloads in video editing, graphics and AI, among other data-heavy tasks. Scan is a full service provider with hardware and software solutions for all sorts of businesses, including filmmaking. So, instead of investing huge amounts of money on hardware and software, you can ‘rent’ virtual workstations from Scan that are accessed via the internet from a standard computer. This way, you get to use the fastest processors and latest programs, sharing projects in real time with ease. It’s not always as simple as uploading video footage to a cloud system, if you are working on location – especially as part of a big production, with limited

Three backups were created after every scene, with two files ultimately stored in the cloud and one on portable drives. Of course, it wasn’t possible to stream 12TB of backup to the cloud on location, so the team used super-secure Lyve Mobile Arrays to back up all their footage. Back at base, this is quickly stored in Lyve’s modular storage racks and uploaded to the cloud in superfast time. From there, editing teams can get to work in a matter of hours, not days, despite vast file sizes. Vendor-agnostic Lyve Mobile solutions are available as a service through the Lyve Data Transfer Service. They come in a variety of simple, reliable storage options and configurations. And the cost is flexible, allowing you to pay only for the Lyve Mobile devices you require – for however long you need them. Lyve Client software allows you to manage and monitor data flow between devices – including encryption, metadata upload and data integrity. And the Lyve Mobile Rackmount Receiver stores the drives in your own location for final editing and long-term storage. It’s just one way of thinking about data and working via the cloud. All serious film production companies need to investigate this brave new world – particularly in these fast-changing times.
bandwidth and many terabytes of footage to be ingested and safely stored. That’s where something like Seagate’s Lyve Mobile system comes in. It merges robust hardware with cloud communication and storage for virtual or remote productions. For example, a team from the University of California made a short film on location with poor internet coverage, and wanted to push the limits of technology. The filming created about 2TB per hour of HDR and Arriraw footage, culminating in 12TB per day of data.

FLIGHT OF FANCY The Blackbird editing system uses a simplified NLE to help non-experts create slick videos and share them. But it can also be used with industry-standard software like Adobe Premiere Pro
