EXCELLENCE, EXPRESSION AND JOY Why performing arts are at the heart of education at St John’s

A t St John’s, performing arts are far more than subjects on a timetable. They are a philosophy, a culture and a defining thread woven through each child’s experience. Music, drama and dance shape the way pupils think, communicate, collaborate and grow, offering an education rooted just as much in confidence and character as in creative excellence. From the earliest years, creativity is treated with intent and playful purpose. Children are able to learn through music, movement and storytelling, exploring ideas and performance long before they step onto a stage. Imagination is considered a powerful educational tool, and performance becomes as natural as conversation. As pupils progress through St John’s, these foundations deepen into disciplined practice, supporting academic learning and personal development. Music is able to thrive at St John’s. Nearly three quarters of pupils learn an instrument, supported by 375 individual lessons each week, while over half the school sings in at least one choir. More than 35 ensembles cater to all abilities and interests, and over 60 concerts per year ensure opportunities for pupils to perform and grow. A 100-strong orchestra sits at the heart of this rich musical life, complemented by jazz, percussion and guitar ensembles that broaden pupils’ musical horizons and understanding. Musical outcomes reflect this depth and breadth. Last term alone, four year 8 pupils achieved grade 8. Seven pupils have been selected for the National Youth Choir, and one pupil has successfully auditioned for the National Children’s Orchestras. Yet excellence is never pursued at the expense of joy. Through a ‘challenge by choice’ approach, pupils are encouraged to stretch themselves at a pace that feels right, building intrinsic motivation and confidence rather than pressure. For some pupils, their musical journey is exceptional in every sense. St John’s offers choristers an unparalleled opportunity to mix a rigorous academic education with elite musical training. Choristers sing regularly with the world renowned St John’s College Choir, taking part in services, concerts, recordings and

international tours at the top professional level, all while remaining fully supported within a warm, ambitious and pastoral school community. Drama and the wider performing arts play an equally vital role. Some year 8 pupils write and perform a play in Latin as part of an inter-schools competition, combining linguistic rigour with theatrical creativity. Pupils also have the chance to compose original music, collaborate on productions and performances and take creative risks in a supportive environment where experimentation is valued. Performing arts at St John’s are an education in life. Pupils learn how to speak so others will listen, how to read the energy in a room, how to adapt when a moment shifts and how to balance individuality with collective purpose. They develop empathy, emotional literacy and courage, while holding on to the playful creativity that makes childhood extraordinary. At St John’s, the performing arts help nurture articulate, grounded and expressive young people. Every rehearsal, performance and lesson reinforces a simple truth: every child belongs, every child contributes and every child is transformed.
