My last three films were shot digitally on Arri’s Alexa. I am always happy with the way this camera works. It is so simple. I feel that I am, in a way, a much better DOP when shooting digitally. I feel more relaxed. It gives me more time to be available to the director and I think I can be more creative.
I feel like I know the Alexa sensor pretty well now. I can walk into a room and know how it’s going to react to the light in the room and it’s a very comforting thing. Just as when I was shooting film I would get to know certain film stocks and pretty much knew how it was going to look on film, as much as possible. The Alexa has the most dynamic range, the most filmic looking images and you don’t have to work to get it to work, it settles in very nicely. I’m pretty familiar with it and dreading the day when they upgrade to another sensor.

On Game of Thrones , we have always used the Arri Alexa. The pilot was shot on film, and there were a number of people – including cinematographer Alik Sakharov – who wanted to carry on using film. However, HBO encouraged the production to at least test the Alexa camera, which they did, and realised that it was pretty darn good – which was my response, too.

I’ve photographed a lot with the Arri D21. Everyone agreed that on the production we couldn’t have wanted a better format, it just looked spectacular. So I was very excited to see what the Alexa could do to better that. So we immediately put the two cameras together and shot some very interesting and elaborate tests comparing the dynamic range, the ASA and the sharpness, skin tone and colour. I was immediately blown away and could see straight away that the Alexa was a completely new camera, it wasn’t just a step forward it was a whole new evolution from Arri.
