Dominic Myland, CEO of Mylands, also gives his paint tips: “Shades of blues, greens and neutrals work well to create a restful and relaxing bedroom environment. Although it is a brighter colour, yellow can also work well. It is cosy and comforting, yet uplifting.” Those with small bedrooms need not shy away from print or bolder colour schemes. Wallpaper house Ohpopsi believes that even the tightest spaces can benefit from a maximalist approach. Creative director Zoe Eaton comments: “One of the easiest ways to inject character and personality into a small room is with a bold, patterned wallpaper. There is a myth that small spaces should be kept simple when it comes to décor, but pattern can make a room feel bigger. Treat the room as a blank canvas and be as brave as your personality will allow.” Often overlooked, says eco-friendly paint brand Earthborn Paints, is the ceiling – or ‘fifth wall’. Cathryn Sanders, commercial manager, says that treating it just like any other wall is a rising trend: “The possibilities are endless when it comes to decorating your ceiling. Wallpaper, artwork and murals have become increasingly stylish options. You can also match the colour of your ceiling to that of the other four walls, which will give a seamless design. Alternatively, make a bold statement by opting for contrasting or accent colours. This will draw the eye upwards and make your ceiling the centrepiece of your bedroom.” Tommaso Franchi, founder of interior design studio Tomèf, agrees with the
he bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home: a place where we rest our heads and switch off from the world around us. It should serve as a personal retreat, a place to call our own. Creating a zen space that feels peaceful and welcoming is paramount when it comes to a bedroom’s aesthetic, but that doesn’t mean you have to end up with a bland look, or that you have to compromise on the latest interior trends. Choosing your colour palette is a good starting point, says Emma Bestley, creative director and co-founder of YesColours, a new sustainable paint brand. “It’s best to think about the tone rather than the actual colour itself. Any colour can be used in the bedroom, but softer, muted shades work best at creating a soothing setting. We all want something different for our bedrooms, however, so those who want to wake up energised can inject more vibrant, saturated colours to their walls.”
