Nicola Foley puts her feet up for the ultimate relaxation package at newcomer Floatwell TRIED & TESTED: FLOATWELL
perfect state to embrace the next stage of the package: a 30-minute dry floatation session. Floatwell also offers wet floatation, in which you float in a pod filled with Epsom salts, but the dry version offers similar benefits while being more convenient – an ideal lunchtime treatment for those days when you just need a break from it all. Led through to another treatment room, I pop on an eye mask and hop onto a kind of waterbed structure with a cushioned surface, cocooned in a blanket then lowered down into the body-temperature water. In dry flotation, thanks to a waterproof membrane, you don’t experience any contact with the water, yet you still enjoy the sensation of complete weightlessness. It’s a unique and very pleasant feeling (my overworked runner’s legs sang with gratitude), and despite my concerns that I wouldn’t be able to stop the chatter in my brain, I found I quickly floated away to an almost meditative state. As well as the feeling of deep relaxation that you experience during dry floatation, the benefits can be longer-term and profound, including improved sleep, reduced blood pressure and better circulation. It’s also just a great way to switch off with zero distractions – something all too rare for most of us. For more information about Floatwell’s treatments, head to floatwell.co.uk

The building itself – an ivy-clad Victorian villa decked out with rich green walls and stylish furniture – is beautiful. My package began with a relaxation massage, administered by experienced therapist and Floatwell co-owner Freya. After a quick chat about any niggles and aches, as well as the kind of pressure I’d prefer in my massage, she gets to work, deftly unknotting tightness and loosening my muscles. Freya opted for a CBD-infused massage oil for me, which sinks deep into the muscle tissue to promote total relaxation. The result? I pretty much dissolved into a zenned-out puddle, which left me in a
