BEST FOR STYLISH SIGHTSEERS GONVILLE HOTEL, CAMBRIDGE

The family-run Gonville Hotel dates back to 1830 and started life as a Senior Fellows house for Gonville & Caius College. Recently renovated, the boutique hotel boasts a collection of chic bedrooms with a luxury feel. The eight feature rooms in the adjacent Georgian Gresham House have restored period features, Penhaligon’s toiletries and Hypnos beds. Decor throughout is rich and colourful, with cosy bedding, velvet chairs and restored fireplaces. The two-AA-Rosette Terrace Restaurant overlooks historic Parker’s Piece, a park where the rules of football were said to have been invented. The contemporary menu by head chef Jamie DeCruz includes inventive dishes such as beef raviolo – slow-braised beef cheek served in a shiitake consommé – and a standout tandoori monkfish dish. As well as summer jazz nights, guests can tour Cambridge in a classic Bentley, ride on a Gonville bicycle or enjoy treatments in the wellness rooms. gonvillehotel.co.uk
