“I also wanted to shoot some sunsets and detail shots for the film. “Because I was onmy own I needed a lightweight outfit,” he explains, “and the solution was to work with a BlackMagic URSAMini and the Sigma Cinema High Speed Zoompair, the 18-35mm and 50‑100mm lenses, which between them covered the full range of focal lengths I needed.” Sigma’s High Speed ZoomLine gets its name on account of the remarkably fast and constant aperture of T2 throughout the entire zoom range, and the lenses’ outstanding optical performance makes them fully ready for high-resolution shooting in up to 8K. While delivering what’s said to be the highest image quality in their class, they remain compact in size, share the same front element size and filter thread and offer all-round amazing value. Meanwhile, they feature the same optical make-up as Sigma’s highly rated Art lenses, which are aimed at stills photographers, while being housed in a freshly-designed cinema lens shell, which offers all the advantages that filmmakers would expect from a dedicated cinema lens. This includes a stepless aperture ring, manual focusing and deep ridging around the barrel to enable accessories such as a follow focus to be used, while pricing has been kept to a highly competitive level. “I came across themon the web and thought tomyself that I really should be trying themout, and it was just a case of getting them in to have a look at,” says

John. “They turned out to be perfect for the job, since they were small and light and easy to carry around London. The quality of the footage they delivered was also outstanding and they were a good colour match for the lenses I was using for the main production footage. “Overall it was very easy to drop the footage I shot into the film, and the material I shot came into its own at the editing stage. For example, there are occasions where the sky I’ve shot using the Sigma lenses has been overlaid over the original sky in the film, since it’s just more interesting and reveals more detail. “Overall I really liked the High Speed Zooms and appreciated what they offered me, and I would certainly be more than happy to work with them again.”

There are three strands to Sigma’s Cinema Lens line-up, namely the FF Zoom Line, High Speed Zoom Line and FF High Speed Prime Line. As the name suggests, the FF Zoom Line, which currently consists of the 24-35mm T2.2, is compatible with full-frame sensors, while offering the highest level of image quality combined with a compact design. The High Speed Zoom Line, used by John, consists of the 18-35mm and 50-100mm, which offer a consistent T2 maximum aperture throughout the entire focal length range. Finally, the FF High Speed Prime Line has no less than seven members: the 14mm T2, 20mm T1.5, 24mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5, 85mm T1.5 and 135mm T2. Compatible with full-frame cameras, these lenses are extraordinarily fast throughout the range and can offer superior resolution to many other rival high-end prime sets. SIGMA’S CINEMA LENS LINE-UP
