Larry Jordan takes a closer look at the new features inside the huge revamp of Apple’s popular Final Cut Pro X for both filmmakers and 360° VR editing specialists UPGRADING A CLASSIC THE LARRY JORDANWORKSHOP THE NEW FCP X

WORDS LARRY JORDAN

A pple has really turned heads with a significant update to Final Cut Pro X that includes several nods to a continually evolving post-production landscape. Big changes have been made in version 10.4, such as 360° VR editing and more complete support for HDR and HEVC, while improved effects include significant changes to colour management and colour tools. And best of all, it’s a free upgrade. Final Cut Pro has followed the lead of rival Adobe Premiere by supporting 360° VR video directly, allowing it to be imported, edited and shared. In addition to displaying 360°

video on the computer monitor screen, FCP X can simultaneously drive a VR headset, such as the HTC Vive VR (provided both SteamVR and High Sierra are installed and running). And 27-inch iMacs or the new iMac Pros are recommended if you’re using a headset. The best way to look at these changes is that Apple has future-proofed FCP X so that when you’re ready to explore 360 and VR technology this software will support you. Over the next four pages we take a look at the changes for filmmakers, both in terms of regular 2D editing and also those taking the plunge into the virtual world of VR.
