wouldn’t be so great that it would turn your head in the way that HDR can.” As mentioned, it’s crucial to keep a wary eye on the progress of evolving technology, and those who are at the cutting edge of the next big thing will always have the advantage. Alister is already commissioned to produce two more films for Philips this year – commercial confidentiality precludes him from giving away too many details, but he will reveal that it’s more of a documentary kind of shoot this time, with run and gun filming - and he’s very happy to have the kit to make HDR production something no more difficult to achieve than a conventional film. That market is only going to grow, and those who want to be part of it will need to start thinking now about how they can re-focus, in order to be up to speed when that first HDR job comes knocking at the door...

You can download Blue Planet II on the BBC’s iPlayer in HDR and the quality is fantastic, and the demand for this product won’t be going away, rather it will keep on growing exponentially. “I see this as being a much more realistic scenario than 8K, which has its uses in terms of shooting at this resolution for editing in 4K, but the fact is that you can’t deliver it with the system we have. And while it will obviously be way better quality than 4K, the difference
