G-TECHNOLOGY ARMORLOCK SSD 2TB £560/$599 g-technology.com
With massive data breaches making international news on a regular basis, security of your files is becoming a much more important consideration. Especially if you work in the creative industries, where you don’t want your precious work, new script, confidential plans or finished film getting into the wrong hands. So, hard drive expert G-Technology has invested hugely in a brand-new security system that means only people you give access to can unlock the hard drive. And that’s not some old-fashioned system of just putting a password on it, as passwords can be cracked or guessed. Especially if – like some careless creatives – you send the password on a sticky note attached to the drive or in an email! Or always use the same password. The new G-Technology system is called Armorlock and the first product to have it is a rugged 2TB portable SSD hard drive, although it will be coming to more products soon as the technology gets rolled out. Unlocking the drive is all done via the free Armorlock app, currently available for Mac iOS and desktop devices from the Apple App Store, but more platforms will follow. You simply open the app, scan the barcode on the drive itself and you’re good to go. You can give the drive a unique name, and add lots of different drives too. It’s then ready to use like a normal SSD drive. When you want to access the contents of the drive, just open the app and it’s unlocked as long as your phone is nearby. No passwords needed, just the usual biometric authentication you use to unlock your phone. To give a remote user access, use the app and authorise access for them. You can send this authorisation to them electronically via email or any of the regular messaging services.
This unlocks the drive when they want to use it. The app also allows you to see a map of where you last used it, and you can erase all the content when you want to. There is also a choice of formats when you set it up. It’s easy to use and fast. And, as it’s a 2TB SSD, the performance of the drive itself is quick. OK, it’s not the fastest on the market – certainly when compared to Thunderbolt 3 drives – but nothing else offers this level of security. Being a rugged product, the drive itself comes in a durable body, has drop protection up to 3 metres and is crush proof to 1000 pounds. It also has IP67 dust and water resistance. The biggest issue at the moment is price as, at £560/$599, it’s at the very top end of rugged 2TB SSD prices. But if you take the security of your work seriously, that’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
