GEAR REVIEW. CANON EOS R5 C
SPOILT FOR CHOICE Raw, Raw Light, XF-AVC and MP4 in both 8- and 10-bit are just the top codec options (above). The SmallRig cage partly obscures the new photo/video selector switch (right)
Essentially, Raw files of all flavours give the ultimate quality, as they retain sensor data to manipulate in post. Change white balance, ISO, noise reduction, sharpening and almost everything else. But this is an extra step in the process, and file sizes are bigger, impacting memory card space and hard drives. The 4:2:2 10-bit XF-AVC is a very good codec that’s faster and easier to use, but you don’t get as much flexibility in post. The All-I version is better quality and less compressed than Long GOP. Shoot in C-Log 3 for loads of dynamic
range, and chances are you will be very happy with the results. Unless you really need 8K for massive cropping in post or SFX and green screen projects, then DCI or regular 4K is a great middle ground, especially in
“Improvements for video are immense, from a range of codecs to zero overheating”
4:2:2 10-bit XF-AVC All-I. Files are smaller than Raw, but easier to edit. Recording in 8K does give a visibly more detailed file, but also a worse rolling shutter effect than 4K, so that might be a concern to you. In all the most-used full-frame settings, right down to FHD, image quality is incredible. There is so much colour information in the files, they can be graded with ease. And Canon’s colour science is legendarily good. CINE CAM Remaining from the EOS R5 is the Dual Pixel AF system Mark II, which tracks moving subjects well and has excellent face pulls by tapping on the subject. And for manual, the focus guide gives a visual indication of which way to turn the focusing ring. Customise this for RF lenses to give a more linear, direct response similar to a manual lens. We also used some Xeen CF cine primes on the and eye detection. It is customisable in terms of focus speed. Use the touchscreen for focus
COMPREHENSIVE A litany of impressive features gives the EOS R5 C the edge, but it’s so much more than bells and whistles
