record some quality ambient noise, at the same time as interviewees were being recorded. At least this gives more options, before you have to start considering complex solutions involving external recorders. Of course, the Sony kit also works with these as the signal can be output via 3.5mm cable. The kit comes with a twin cable to a single output, so audio from both transmitters is patched straight into a single input in a recorder, for example – or any camera that doesn’t have an MI shoe. The set-up comes with a pair of XLR output cables, which can be used on recorders or cameras that have larger inputs. With these, output level can be set on the transmitter. It’s a quick way of working. The only shortcomings are that the Sony transmitters don’t offer built-in recording, control by app or a safety track at -10dB. Many newer twin-input audio kits have features like this. Instead, the UWP-D27 is all about a fast, easy way of working that maximises reliability. If you have a Sony with an MI shoe and value speed and ease, definitely consider this kit.

URX-P41D has reduced RF signal dropout because of its two receiving antennae. The angle of the antennae can also be adjusted, which helps to further eliminate potential dropout issues. We had no problems during our tests. The kit now has Sony’s digital audio processing, which uses DSP (digital signal processing) to improve sound quality. Audio is definitely both clear and crisp, and ideal for speech. We did a back-to-back test with the older UWP kit and could hear the difference. It’s not massive, but it is there – and we all know how important audio is. When using two lav mics via the twin transmitters, each is recorded onto a separate channel, so they can be easily edited in post, or combined into one dual mono track. There is also an input for an additional wired mic. If you plug in another lav mic, for example, this could be used on an interviewer talking to two subjects, so all the audio is recorded on one file. Plug in a stereo mic, then you get full, four-channel recording. We tried it with a very small Olympus to
