Q. I always record in 8-bit depth. I was considering starting to record in 10-bit, but will my clients or I see any difference, as the videos are mainly for social media and YouTube? - Walt Olsen, Los Angeles A. The most significant benefit of shooting 10-bit over 8-bit is the improved colour depth captured. If you have the option to shoot 10-bit, I would, even for social and YouTube delivery, as it gives you more options in post for colour processing and future mastering. However, if your camera restricts 10-bit options to larger or harder-to-playback recording formats, you may have to weigh up if it’s worth it! Q. I have read a lot about native ISO, but how do I know what my camera’s is? Should I always shoot at that for the best quality? I thought a lower ISO would give better results. I use a Sony A7 IV. - Sam Trimble, Manchester A. A camera’s native ISO will depend on the gamma curve allied to the profile you select. For example, the Sony A7 IV has a base ISO of 800 when shooting in S-Log3. A camera’s native ISO is where the manufacturer has rated the dynamic range to be its best, while providing a clean image with the optimum signal- to-noise ratio, as this is where there is no amplification being added to the data from the sensor. Shoot below or above that, your dynamic range and noise will change as you alter the gain. Q. In terms of value for money, would I be better buying a large 2x1 LED panel for soft light in interviews, or a COB LED and large softbox? - Gary King, London

Q. I see the new Arri Alexa 35 still uses a Super 35 sensor. I thought full-frame was the way to go for better noise. Is there such a difference any more on high-end cameras? - Alex Morello, Bristol A. How a sensor performs is more complicated than just sensor size, but it is a common generalisation to say that full-frame sensors can perform better in lower light. At every level of the market, you will see various cameras performing differently when it comes to noise. From the time we’ve spent testing the camera, by default the Alexa 35 is great at control of noise. And with the introduction of Arri’s new Textures mode, you can actually dial in your noise characteristics. If you want to learn more information about that, check out our full review on YouTube.

A. This really depends on what flexibility you want. A 2x1 soft LED panel is good for pulling out of the bag and shooting without the need for extra modifiers. Brighter COB lights can normally be bought more cheaply than their 2x1 counterparts, but you will have to deal with carrying a modifier around with you – and the set-up time that goes along “The most significant benefit of shooting 10-bit over 8-bit is the improved colour depth captured, but it may restrict your recording options”

SENSOR AND SENSIBILITY Arri has been the gold standard in feature films for years, and its new Alexa 35 looks set to continue that trend
