There’s also social media, with roughly half the world’s population already connected. The global average use is a little over two hours a day per person. And there’s gaming, too – not just watching games as esports or influencer content, but actually playing them. Don’t forget podcasting. As of last year, Mashable confirmed with Apple that there were more than one million podcasts on the Apple Podcasts platform alone – that’s shows, not individual episodes, which would run to many times more. And Apple Podcasts isn’t the only platform out there. Did we mention porn? Adult content site PornHub publishes its search and visitation stats regularly, as well as a widely read annual report. It’s a great resource for researchers – I can’t help but think it’s also a way for them to brag. In 2019, 1.36 million hours of content were uploaded. Finally, some people still listen to music, and they even read. No, seriously. They do. And this is often done via the internet or other digital platforms. So, where were we? Oh, yes. You want to make money with internet content.

There’s more video content than anyone knows what to do with. Is there really a way of making money from something that’s so disposable?

content are uploaded to YouTube every minute? It equates to 262,800,000 hours – or 30,000 years – each year. And that’s just YouTube, the dominant VOD social platform. There are also Vimeo, Daily Motion and local platforms, such as China’s YouKu and iQiyi. Netflix news site whats-on-netflix.com helpfully estimates that US Netflix houses roughly two million minutes – or 33,333 hours – of content. On top of that, you’ve got Disney+, Prime Video, Apple TV, HBO Max, Hulu, Britbox, Mubi and more. Then there’s the rest of the TV content – news, game shows, entertainment... and let’s not forget that content behemoth, sports. Speaking of sports, what about all that live content – from concerts, to lectures and webinars, to the mass of livestreamed content on platforms? The website twitchtracker.com calculated that more than 88,697,867 hours of content was streamed on Twitch in January 2021 – that’s just one month.
