Looking at streaming within the broader film industry, the report reveals some interesting trends. SVOD services are claiming an ever-larger part of the market, with the film industry suffering major losses as a result of cinema closures. While lockdown continues in many places as 2021 progresses, Omdia forecasts a 71.5% YOY (Year-Over- Year) reduction in 2020 box office revenue, as it drops below $13 billion for the first time in more than two decades. Revenue could reach pre- 2019 levels by 2023, provided there’s a change in our ongoing circumstances. The boom in streaming has not compensated for the industry’s shortfall, despite a forecast of $34 billion across transactional and subscription online video – a 30% increase for 2020 compared to 2019. Overall losses amounted to $23 billion when comparing 2020’s global revenue to that of the previous year.
