FEED Issue 13

57 ROUND TABLE Gender Diversity

FEED: For mentees, what are you learning and hope to gain from the Rise mentorship programme? For mentors, what did you hope to get out of it? ANNE-LOUISE BUICK: I get to learn from my mentee. Gaining insights from a different generation in the same industry is such an asset, it broadens my thinking and enables me to see opportunities and have ideas I might not have had on my own. SADIE GROOM: As a mentor, I wanted to meet other fantastic women who understood the need for role models at all levels of the business. I also wanted to learn things from my mentee and definitely didn’t see it as a one-way street. CALINA HO: I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the first run of the scheme and, as cheesy as it sounds, it really was incredibly inspiring! It has given me a new sense of self-confidence, as well as a new network of fantastic and supportive women.

CARYS HUGHES: I’m an engineer at heart and although I can manage stakeholders and multiple pieces of work in parallel, those skills are the fruit of some very steep learning curves. I wanted to take time to invest in my interpersonal and time management skills, and I thought it was great to talk through some of those challenges with someone who had already learnt those lessons. FEED: How do you think the broadcast industry is doing with its integration and promotion of women? ANNE-LOUISE BUICK: We can always do better, particularly with promoting the non-creative career opportunities in the industry to females, demonstrating through advocacy and putting the spotlight on female colleagues, and how those roles are relevant and attainable to them. SADIE GROOM: The #MeToo campaign has done a lot to put gender diversity to the

that effort. I’m passionate about seeing current students, and even those at school age, discover that there is exciting and interesting technical work to get involved in within this sector. FEED: Who is your Rise mentee/mentor and what do they do? ANNE-LOUISE BUICK: My mentee was Zoe Gardiner, who is a marketing executive for an award-winning LED lighting manufacturer for film, TV and photography. SADIE GROOM: My mentee was Danielle Hay from EditShare. CALINA HO: My mentor was Naomi Carter, who is the head of production and factual entertainment at Mentorn Media. She’s brilliant. CARYS HUGHES: My mentor was Dee Davidson, business operations director at Deluxe Entertainment Services Group.
