MOVIE MATTERS IBC PREVIEW
The annual IBC filmmaking convention will take place this December in Amsterdam– one way or another THE SHOWMUST GO ON!
WORDS ADAM DUCKWORTH
A fter a year off in 2020, the huge, annual jamboree that is the IBC will be taking place. From 3-6 December, the industry will gather in Amsterdam’s RAI halls – three months later than its usual slot. The show will have a massive online presence, to allow people who don’t want to travel a chance to see the best bits. Some of the highlights, like the annual awards, are being given out virtually. But in a brave move, organisers have examined new Covid-19 protocols from the Dutch government, and say they are firmly set on delivering a safe, real-life event that will re-engage the industry after a very challenging year. That’s despite a new lockdown in the country, scheduled to end the day the show starts. The Netherlands was the first nation in western Europe to impose a partial lockdown since the summer, introducing strict measures in the face of record numbers of new infections. These included the closure of bars, restaurants and essential shops
from 8pm, with non-essential retail and services to shut at 6pm. Gatherings at home are limited to a maximum of four guests, sporting events must be held behind closed doors and working from home is advised. IBC 2021 will take place in a ‘protected zone’. A perimeter fence surrounds the exhibition centre, and all attendees enter via two checkpoints. Visitors will be required to show their Covid-19 status and answer health screening questions before going in. Social distancing of 1.5 metres will be in place while queuing for entry. Once inside the protected zone, attendees will be able to move around confidently, knowing they are in a safe place. Despite that, face coverings and a zero personal contact policy are recommended. Some companies have pulled out of exhibiting, but the majority have opted to attend what’s billed as the world’s most influential media, entertainment and technology show. The event is massive, spilling out across 15 halls, and packed with visitors from around the
world. Typically, more than 50,000 people attend. Many of the industry’s big players have huge stands, crammed

with products and personnel. There’s also a programme of events and workshops.
A key component is IBC Digital. This will run in tandemwith the live event, allowing attendees to engage with the show and enjoy all the insights, innovations and interactions, say organisers. Visitors can watch content, schedule online meetings, review profiles and invite colleagues to live meetings. IBC Digital’s powerful AI technology will offer personalised recommendations for sessions, exhibitors and products. The content will run until the end of March 2022, so the show really will go on!
