Cinematic look for less

The Formatt-Hitech Black Supermist Circle filter kit is an affordable way to give your work a stylishmakeover

T he dreamy and cinematic look of a slightly diffused image can work wonders when you are trying to create a stylish, more esoteric feel in your movies. Getting rid of some of the super-sharp edges from pricey lenses and large, high-resolution sensors can be done in post, but it’s far more professional and satisfying to get it right when shooting. There are lots of diffusion filters on the market, but most are expensive and come in the traditional 4x5.65in size, for use with full-size matte boxes. Formatt- Hitech makes all its filters in Wales, which includes high-end cine filters like this. But, ideal for independent filmmakers is a range of screw-in filters. These are more affordable and suitable for smaller cameras, such as mirrorless. They have been used to great effect in lots of amazing movies. And that’s why readers of Pro Moviemaker have voted the Black Supermist Circle filter kit as best lens accessory in the annual Pro Moviemaker Gear of the Year Awards. A set of four Black Supermist screw-in filters are available in the popular 82mm

and 77mm sizes, and come in full, half, quarter and eighth strength. So, you can mix and match for the look you want.

The Supermist filters just screw on and reduce fine details, as well as give a film-like bloom to point light sources. This lower-contrast look provides a vintage feel, but preserves dynamic range. The Black Supermist is subtler than a standard Clear Supermist that Formatt- Hitech offer. There is also less lightening of shadow areas. The filter frames are thin to avoid vignetting on even very wide lenses, which makes them optimal if you have to use stepping rings to fit them to other lenses. The filters are inexpensive, easy to use, compact, and can give your footage a softer and more cinematic look in an instant. They’ve proved so popular, Formatt-Hitech has also included the Black Supermist filters in its new Firecrest Ultra Cine Superslim range. These are more affordable 4x5.65in filters, that are half the thickness of most options. This keeps the weight down and allows two to be used in a single mount.

BLOOMING LOVELY The Black Supermist filters come in a set of different strengths. When used on point light sources, there is a very filmic bloom (top)
