GEAR OF THE YEAR AWARDS LIGHTING

EDITOR’S CHOICE: ROTOLIGHT TITAN X1 It’s no secret that filmmakers loved the Titan X2 panel, made by British company Rotolight. So, when a half-size version called the Titan X1 was revealed – still featuring the same incredible technology – it had to be our Editor’s Choice. Like the Titan X2, the X1’s unique, electronically adjustable diffusion is incredible. Instead of using diffusion gels to soften the light, you adjust it using rear controls or remote control. The glass panel of the 1x1ft light alters from fully clear to opaque, instantly softening. It features a full RGBWW lighting array, so you can simply dial in any colour you want, and it’s all controlled from the touch-screen display on the rear of the unit – one of the various remote control options. The Titan has customisable SFX settings and high-speed sync flash, ideal for those who shoot stills as well as video.

Get the lighting right and your work will be transformed. So, the correct kit is vital if you are to achieve the desired results in your movies. In the hard lights category, the winner for the second year running is the brilliant Broncolor LED F160 – which allows image makers to produce photo and video shots in one go, using a wide range of light- shapers. The brand has everything, from beauty dishes to parabolic reflectors, snoots and softboxes. The LED F160 is designed as a point light source, working well with light-shaping accessories. There is a small dial on the side of the unit, allowing the light to be focused slightly, giving even more precise control. Using the rear OLED panel, it’s easy to change lighting power output, as well as colour temperature from 2800-6800K in steps of 50, and alter tint from green to magenta. A single button on the rear overrides the settings and toggles between Daylight and Tungsten, for quick changes. The

performance is bright, consistent and accurate. The light has built-in Wi-Fi to integrate with the bronControl app. To use on location away from a power source, Broncolor also sells the Li-Ion battery kit, with a 36V XLR battery, V-Mount stand clamp and charger. In the light panels category, the winner is the impressive Litepanels Gemini 2x1. This RGBWW LED light source lets you dial in any colour you like, as well as white with full hue, saturation and intensity control. There is wired or wireless DMX remote control, and the fixture can be battery powered on location. There are also lots of accessories to deliver the results you need, such as softboxes, eggcrate grids and stacking kits. Use up to four Geminis at once for a huge light source. In lighting innovation, the winner is the Astera Titan Tube. It’s “The Litepanels Gemini 2x1 lets you dial in any colour you like, as well as white with full hue and saturation”

an LED tube that emits powerful, tunable white, with ultra-high colour rendering, as well as coloured light, which can be applied to individual pixels or the whole tube. It can be used indoors or out, mains powered or on battery, and on the go with the AsteraApp, with wired or wireless DMX.
