ROUND TABLE Covid-19 51

any school to use Singular for free for non-commercial purposes. There is a huge incentive in this emergency to migrate to the cloud and remote solutions. In the long term, we will see a wide adoption of cloud solutions as users experience the benefits in terms of cost, ease of use, capabilities and flexibility. The technologies aren’t new, but the Covid-19 crisis has simply accelerated the demand for these types of solutions. As customers adapt and become familiar with these new tools, they will recognise they are not better or worse, but different. When we get through the Covid-19 crisis, cloud production will become legitimised and much more widely adopted. This growth will continue as technology facilitates more and more capabilities migrating to cloud enterprises.

Although our team is used to working remotely, it is still important to simply stay in touch with each other – even if it’s just to chat and catch up, especially while everyone is experiencing these unprecedented levels of isolation. In our industry, we have seen an incredibly rapid change to adapt to these new circumstances. This has required everyone from Singular to step up and support our clients and partners around the world at any hour of the day. We’re a small team dealing with three to four times the amount of volume in the past month. It’s been amazing to see what our users are able to accomplish with Singular and other cloud solutions in days or weeks. This type of flexibility is simply not possible in a traditional workflow and we believe it will have a profound impact on our industry.

CLOUD PRODUCTION WILL BECOME LEGITIMISED ANDWIDELY ADOPTED

content is being watched online now (vs in cinemas) and with more revenue riding on OTT, they want to prevent piracy. We have seen much lower volumes for our sports channels (who rely on live sports to drive subscription and viewing figures) and delays on sports- related project. But we have seen a rise in esports, with various sports leagues getting more involved (or speeding up what they were already working on) while they’re unable to broadcast physical sports. For example, Formula 1 is running a virtual GP series, and one of our clients, VRT, is broadcasting virtual cycling, with pro cyclists racing at home on their exercise bikes, but connected to a virtual racing screen. Another change is remote production becoming mainstream as engineers set up editing facilities and post-production galleries in their home offices. This may help speed up the wider move to the cloud for the rest of the industry.

I HAVE LEARNT THE TRUE MEANING OF TEAM SPIRIT – THE FLEXIBILITY, WILLINGNESS AND CARE FOR EACH OTHER HAS BEEN REMARKABLE

Media projects commissioned by our non-broadcast clients have also taken a hit – in the hard-hit airline industry especially – and other ‘nice to have’ non-essential projects have been delayed across all sectors. On the other hand, I have learnt the true meaning of team spirit during the past weeks. Vualto has always been a close-knit team, but the flexibility, willingness and care for each other has been remarkable. We are used to remote working and video calls – I knew we could cope with that – but to see the

sustained morale and community has been gratifying. We have some great health and wellbeing officers at Vualto who have put some brilliant ideas into practice. One idea is for everyone to reach out to two employees that they would not normally speak to in their normal job and to find out how they are coping with the lockdown. This is great way to make sure everyone has been included and has someone to talk to if they need to. As for the industry, it can survive – and without several floors of glass offices!
