STORAGE

“Nobody wants to wait around for an hour while cards are copied to a hard drive” There is an ever-growing selection of SSDs for use on location, at a range of prices, speeds and capacities. Not all SSDs record at the same rate, so it’s important to carefully check the speed rating of your drive and settings being used in the camera to make sure everything is compatible. Some of the best-known hard drive manufacturers are getting really serious about small SSDs, and prices are becoming more affordable. One of the best-known names is G-Technology, whose range has been rebranded as SanDisk Professional. Although the overall brand will change, the drives will still carry the G-Technology logo. Available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB versions from just £115/$105, the G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD has the faster USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection, compatible with USB-C, USB-3.0 and Thunderbolt 3 computers. With a transfer rate of up to 560MB/s, it offers a speed of performance that is so much faster than even the quickest HDDs. It comes in an insulated custom enclosure, housed in a tough aluminium core, helping to prevent overheating. It also has IP67 water and dust resistance, drop protection for up to 3m, and crush resistance of 454kg/1000lb.

STATE OF PLAY Solid state drives (SSDs) don’t have the moving parts of hard disk drives (HDDs). This means they’re much less vulnerable to impacts or vibration, and also significantly faster

If you really have the need for speed, the G-Drive Mobile Pro SSD comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB (from £236/$200). Using the newest version of Thunderbolt 3 and a quicker PCIe drive, the G-Drive Mobile Pro SSD allows for continuous transfer rates of up to 2800MB/S, delivering incredible speed. You can edit multi-stream 8K footage at full frame rate and transfer up to 1TB of data in around seven minutes. Performance matches the very latest crop of super high-resolution cinema cameras, allowing you to edit footage in real time. It also has a shock-resistant case that can withstand a 3m drop, with crush resistance of 454kg/1000lb, just like its sister product.

SanDisk also has its own Extreme Pro Portable SSD, with transfer speeds of up to 1050MB/s, a rugged case, and availability in a large capacity of up to 2TB. The SSD units have a forged aluminium body, with a durable silicon rubber coating for impact resistance. It has IP55 rating for water and dust resistance, and comes with a five- year warranty. The SanDisk Extreme Pro is compatible with both PCs and Macs, plus USB Type-C and Type-A connectors. A 1TB drive costs £180/$180. Lacie’s new Rugged SSDs bring the legendary orange-coloured HDD drives bang up to date – they now have faster and safer SSDs inside and a new all-black
