If we have an open standard, people would stick on whatever optics they’ve got because they mechanically fit – when the light comes out not great, they’d probably blame the Orbiter.” It should not be controversial to suggest this is a field in which better standardisation beckons, but even with current technology, the benefits are easily underestimated. Interchangeable-modifier lighting, at least on the current scale, has the potential to make a small truck full of lighting do the same work as a somewhat larger one, and that’s hard to argue with.
