beneficial for any rental company,” he confirms. “A lot of the lights do similar things. They’ll have a fresnel, reflector-intensifiers, which are different sorts of beam angle, varying sizes of softbox – round and rectangular – and a lantern.” Jung has witnessed the demand for bigger, stronger accessory mounts as the ambition of lighting engineers has grown. “The Nanlux Evoke 1200 has a similar mount to a Bowens, but it’s much bigger and stronger because the light itself is as well. Nanlux also has an adaptor, the AS-PJA-NLM, allowing you to use an ETC Source Four tube, similar to what Arri has done with Orbiter. They know the size of their LED emitter on the Evoke, and there’s a big lump of glass inside the adaptor housing that’ll focus the light for optimal performance.” Using legacy lenses is, Jung continues, an approach which demands a bit of care. “A lot of lens tubes were designed many years ago for tungsten lights, and now we have LED lights with a different size of emitter. ETC have a lot of nice new LED Source Fours, but when you transfer a lens from an old tungsten ETC to an LED fixture,

you need to make sure there are correct optics between the two.” Again, simple designs are likely to be less sensitive to the details: “If you’re using a softbox which is three-feet deep, with an emitter that’s slightly further forward, it’s not going to make much difference at all. But if you have a glass fresnel lens, it’s going to make quite a difference to spot and flood, because they change by moving the lens against the emitter.”

JACK OF ALL TRADES Getting multiple effects out of a single light is a concept that’s gaining in popularity

MOVING WITH THE TIMES Using legacy fittings is possible, but care must be taken to match up equipment
