Variable ND+CPL
It sounds too good to be true: a filter that is a variable neutral density, a circular polariser and fits most of your lenses
THE H&Y REVORING 67-82mm Variable ND+CPL suits still and video work, and has two major selling points. First, it’s a combined ND and circular polariser filter. The ND has a filter factor from 3x (1.5EV) to 1000x (10EV). Second, it fits a range of lenses, thanks to Revoring’s unique mounting diaphragm. This spring-loaded version has eight blades, the end of each is threaded to mesh with the lens thread. Attaching the filter is simple: just grip the rim of the Revoring, then rotate the adjacent ring to close the diaphragm. Keep a grip of both rings to hold the diaphragm in situ, place it against the lens front, and release so the blades grip the filter thread. ‘Turn. Hold. Release’ as it says on the filter. It takes a little dexterity, but the process is simple enough. Once on the lens, rotate the Revoring a little to ensure it is fully
engaged. Correctly done, the Revoring is firmly attached – enough to take the camera’s whole weight. Not that I would suggest you pick up the camera in that manner out in the field. There is a Revoring adapter starting from £33. This is like having a variable step-up ring that can fit your existing filters. Buy the 52-72mm Variable adapter for £37, and your 77mm filters can be used on an impressively wide range of lenses. I tested the VND+CPL on a variety of cameras, with auto white balance and set Kelvin values. After a few test shots, I was happy using the Revoring in AWB – there was no discernible colour shift as the ND got stronger, or when the polariser was in use. The ND section of the filter is rotated using the smooth protruding handle; the polariser has a knurled handle. Both rotate together smoothly
bright situations, such strong filter factors are not needed – unless you’re shooting at super-wide apertures in bright sunlight. So, no issues here, and this filter also gives a smooth and controllable fade. WC
with a firm resistance. To move one, just hold the handle of the other. If you only want to use the polariser with minimal ND, which has a filter factor or just under 3x or 1.5EV, hold both grips as close as possible and rotate them in unison, to give the desired polarising effect. Then you can adjust the ND, if required. There’s a filter factor guide on the rim, marked frommin to max, with numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5 in-between. I found the gap between each marked value was pretty accurate at 1EV. It varies, but for still work, I got around 6-7EV of ND before uneven coverage.
This filter is excellent if you want moderately long exposures, but you might need a stronger, dedicated ND if you’re looking for more. For video, where there’s a requirement to control light in

Verdict The H&Y Revoring 67-82mm Variable ND+CPL is a versatile one- filter solution for stills and video work. It’s a quality product and the innovative locking diaphragm is practical and usable, too. This size sells at £209 – that’s very good value for what you get.
