A CAMERA BAG must tick many different boxes and every user has specific needs. This is why some photographers own more than one. Personally, I have bags for street shooting, landscapes, travelling, a camera/lens pouch and a kitchen sink bag when everything must go. Vanguard’s VEO Adaptor backpack family features four bags: two S side opening options, the S41 and S46, and two rear opening options, the R44 and R48. We have tested the S41 and R48, priced at £99.99 and £119.99, respectively. While the bags have different details, there is one feature common to them both: a built-in USB-A interface. This allows you to safely plug in a power bank, to then connect a lead to whichever device you choose. It means you can charge or continue using your equipment while on the move – very handy. The S41 is a thin-profile bag, suited to urban use, with enough capacity for a versatile outfit. Access is via the zipped side panels. When you are on location, just slip the bag off and have it hanging from one shoulder, while you access the contents via the sides – left or right. The bottom section of the S41 is large enough for a DSLR, with standard lens fitted, plus a couple of extra lenses. There’s not much wasted space, and mesh pockets in the top and side flaps suit storing spare batteries, memory cards, cleaning kit and more. The side flaps are equipped with an anti-theft zip, while water bottles can be stashed in elasticated pockets. On the front is a discreet pocket for a ten-inch tablet, a tripod foot pocket and retaining strap, which means you can get at the kit without having to take the tripod off first. Verdict Vanguard has another winner on its hands with its Adaptor range – the bags here, VEO S41 and R48, are excellent. The integrated USB-A port is a key selling point and undoubtedly very useful and practical, but these bags are much more than one-trick ponies. reconfigured. I had the R48’s interior organised to accept a long lens attached to a camera body, ideal for taking out the telezooms tested in this issue – the Sony A7R IV with Tamron 150-500mm and Canon EOS R5 with 100-500mm. I could just take out the kit via the rear or top. This still left room for additional lenses, a speedlight and filter set in the bag’s main compartment – and there’s a laptop sleeve with securing strap on the inside of the rear cover. Just like the S41, the R48 has a number of pockets for small items, and the tripod carrying arrangement is the same. All in all, I found both bags great to use. The padded shoulder straps are ergonomically dimpled, sternum and waist straps are fitted and there is a quality handle, too. The interior, with supplied dividers, is quick to adjust and protection levels are high. Getting the tripod on and off is fast and easy. WC
