FUJIFILM X-S10 Fujifilm revisited the drawing board when it designed the X-S10, making it a camera with more appeal to Canon/Nikon DSLR users thinking about switching to mirrorless. So, while it looks different, it has all the features and cutting-edge image making skills you would expect from Fujifilm.

I tend to shoot close subjects, rather than more distant ones – so mostly portraiture and downwards. If I have a subject I can move around, leave it, go away for a cup of tea and come back to, I am happy and more comfortable. I now use a Nikon Z 50 and am looking to upgrade at some point. That’s why I wanted to come to this event. I was pleasantly surprised with the X-S10, although a little more time to get used to the camera would have been good. For example, I was looking to select Velvia Film Simulation mode and had to ask Carl how to do it. Once he showed me, I thought ‘wow that was simple’. I liked the feel and weight of the camera, the realism of it. The body doesn’t feel plasticky. And I loved the XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR, which is a great price for what it offers. The ergonomics of the articulating monitor were excellent and I liked it, especially being able to turn it inwards. The camera performed very well in the fading light. I underexposed some shots, but when retrieving the images in Raw, I was impressed with the low-colour noise. I enjoyed my time on the shoot with the X-S10, but the X-T30 Mark II might be a better contender for the direction I want to take my photography in. Do I want another camera? Yes I do, the addiction is deep, so I am looking. I have since been back to the Fujifilm House of Photography to see the kit; I might take Fujifilm’s offer of a free 48-hour loan (see panel for details) and try the X-T30 Mark II to find out if it’s the right one – or maybe it’s the X-T4? Lots to think about...
