But the paradigm shift from hardware to IT doesn’t mean throw everything out and start again. Those physical controllers can still be integrated into a software- defined workflow, but rather than process locally using DSP (digital signal processing) or FPGA (field- programmable gate array), all the heavy lifting is done virtually. It’s also important to ensure the user interface remains familiar to make the learning curve as mild as possible. Moving to IT isn’t about ceding control – where the processing happens should be irrelevant to the end user, while maintaining an intuitive interface is fundamental. A benefit of virtualisation is that the UI can be personalised for multiple users, with a customised profile available at the touch of a button. SOUND ATTITUDE There’s a range of video solutions already taking advantage of virtualisation, but not many on the

CONCERNED BROADCASTERS According to a recent industry survey*, 74% of respondents think the changes made to more distributed, remote workflow models during the pandemic will be permanent. Similarly, they report that 59% of broadcasters use remote desktops for remote operations. Remote desktop technology may be a first step into distributed production environments for some, but it’s insecure and inefficient, often coming about because of a lack of natively distributed solutions from traditional vendors. A concern for broadcasters with virtualisation stems from needing their own operators to get the best possible experience. Broadcast engineers don’t want all their tools replaced by touchscreens; audio engineers would prefer to feel physical faders under their fingers to do the job properly.
