Roland switchers are being used to make top-notch broadcasts out of everyday events

s the pandemic rendered in-person events impossible last year, live

The VR Series enables organisations to create multiple output destinations, combining video switching, audio mixing and USB webcam output for an online audience; along with HDMI and SDI connectivity standards for a live, in-person audience. ABSENT FRIENDS Customers finding multiple uses for Roland’s hybrid-event switchers include award-winning wedding photographer, Sanjay Jogia. He first used the Roland VR-4HD all-in-one HD AV Mixer and video switcher in January, when the UK was in full lockdown, transforming his photographic premises in Harrow, West London, into a proper broadcast studio. The fully networked Eye Jogia showroom positions the VR-4HD on a workstation, where it controls each element of an audio/visual set-up that includes multiple Canon cameras in every room, a Hollyland wireless video transmission system and Tether Tools D-Tap batteries for power. The VR-4HD’s channels are set to match the transmitter ’s, enabling the source to be changed by tapping on the VR-4HD touchscreen display. “Despite lockdown and clients being unable to visit the premises, I wanted a high-quality experience

streams became a big topic for not just organisations, but also individuals, that hadn’t previously considered themselves ‘broadcasters.’ Churches, schools, lower-tier sports teams and other businesses are continuing to invest in their online presence, not only to serve those who cannot be there, but also provide new revenue streams. The hybrid event, combining a smaller number of in-person attendees with a larger online audience, presents several workflow challenges for companies seeking to accommodate everyone. An online audience often requires a unique AV mix, showing presenter and content simultaneously. They may also include remote presenters, inside picture-in-picture (P-in-P) windows. Meanwhile, the live event usually involves presentations and a video screen in front of a live audience. Cameras need to be almost invisible. Operators for both audiences tend to be restricted to one or two people – often volunteers with no professional expertise, so controls need to be simple. Roland’s VR Series of AV mixers have been designed specifically to meet the needs of these emerging hybrid markets.
