it on most of the 200 or so events that it produces every year. Porro notes that the SpaceX team has used the software in its live YouTube streams, while on the smaller end of the scale, other users include house of worship producers, small broadcasters and other streaming event companies. THE ONE-MAN BAND Another outfit worth watching is H2R Graphics, a one-person events company founded by YouTube streamer John Barker, who started playing around with JavaScript after wanting to put “a little bit more effort into productions, without spending a ton of money”. H2R currently offers free downloads, which might be considered entry-level solutions in the automated graphics arena. “I pitch it as the easiest way to get going if this is your first year in the business and you just want to get that timer on the screen – this allows you to do it fast and you don’t have to pay anything,” says Barker. What’s interesting about Barker is his commitment to refining his tools to help him run his own conferences and YouTube streams more smoothly. He is set to quit his full-time job to focus on creating a monetised version of his applications. While H2R’s software is currently a download and not cloud-reliant, this is an area Barker is currently exploring.
Holographics’ HTML-, JavaScript- and CSS-based overlay platform is based on widgets and themes, with a built-in library including tickers, lower thirds, broadcast messages and countdown timers. While Holographics’ freemium download is browser-based rather than cloud-based, Porro claims its users are able to run it in similar way to a cloud-based service. “A lot of production companies have some kind of remote operating technology access, and they run Holographics on a server and expose that to their local network or a VPN,” says Porro. “It’s basically network software. With the API and SDK, you can control everything through the internet if you want.” Because the Holographics software is available as a download and the company does not offer any formal support, it has not kept a close track of individual users – although Stream My Event uses
