RETIREMENT LIVING

care home setting. “When you go and look around,” adds Scott Brooker from The Manor care home, “pay close attention to the cleanliness of the home, how team members engage with residents, and the general happiness of people living there. We pride ourselves on creating a home-from-home environment. Check out the activities schedule, and ask for introductions to staff and the home manager – you should also be able to look through photo books to get a feel for day- to-day life.” Cherry Hinton Care Home and The Manor are both run by TLC Care, which has nine homes in the south of England and puts a strong emphasis on enriching residents’ lives with rewarding activities, good food and specialist care. Cambridge Manor, located on Milton Road, has lovely gardens, luxurious interiors and lively communal areas, while Cherry Hinton is a charming, newly refurbished care home with a family feel. If funds are tight, another possible avenue to explore is an almshouse – which offers a charitable form of self-sufficient,

low-cost community housing, held in trust for local people in housing need. These are by no means a new concept, but they’re rising in popularity due to the growing urgency for affordable housing for older people. “Almshouse charities have been providing safe, secure homes for those in housing need for hundreds of years. Today, 36,000 people across the UK call them home,” comments Jinty Keir at The Foundation of Edward Storey in Mount Pleasant. “Despite its age, we believe the almshouse model is as relevant today as it has ever been.” The foundation has 90 purpose-built, sheltered flats and offers grants to those who are eligible. Whichever route you pick, Cambridge is fortunate to have some of the finest retirement villages and care homes in the country – ready to advise and support you or your loved one every step of the way.
