I t’s difficult to recall a year when so many documentaries made the headlines for different reasons. That’s why this issue is dedicated to the non-fiction genre. From Attenborough’s Wonder of Song and Frozen Planet II for BBC One, to the cinematic release of the David Bowie odyssey Moonage Daydream and Netflix’s The Tinder Swindler , there were hard-hitting docs across many major platforms. The Letter: A Message for our Earth , presented by YouTube Originals, shows an unprecedented call to action for climate change from Pope Francis. The film, which premiered at the Vatican’s New Synod Hall, was a major talking point at the 40th anniversary of Wildscreen Festival. In this edition, there’s also the fascinating story of how Thunderbirds mastermind Gerry Anderson was brought ‘back to life’ with the aid of deepfake technology.
