NANLITE PAVOSLIM 120C £875/$799 nanlite.co.uk Just when you thought the world of filmmaking had moved over to COB LED lights with massively deep softboxes comes Nanlite’s slimline tonic – the Pavoslim 120C. A full- colour LED 2x1 panel coming in at a svelte 18.6mm/0.73in wide, it makes COB lights and parabolic modifiers look like oversized balloons. If you have the room for a massive light and modifier, or need hard lighting for drama with a fresnel or barn doors as well as soft lighting, a COB LED makes sense. But if space is an issue, or you want to rig a soft light above a scene, then a 2x1 panel can be perfect. Especially when it’s as thin and lightweight as this new Nanlite Pavoslim 120C. For £875/$799 you get the all- metal fixture weighing 1.76kg/3.9lb. The metal dissipates heat well so there is no cooling fan needed. On the back of the light are quick-release adapters to fasten the included baby pin or swivel mount to fit onto a stand. A cable leads from the light to a separate power pack which comes with its own high-quality stand clamp. The pack is where you can alter most of the settings using two large knobs and the Menu and Mode buttons. You can use the free Nanlink app or wireless DMX. Nanlite also offers a stand-alone remote control and Wi-Fi transmitter which can be added as an optional extra. Also included is a small softbox that you can keep attached via hook-and-loop fasteners. This can be pulled forward when needed and one of the diffusion panels attached can make the light even softer. There are two versions in the kit, one that is more diffused but does cut a bit

It doesn’t need much space – certainly when compared to a COB light with a softbox – and offers great value for money against big brands. AD PRO MOVIEMAKER RATING: 9/10 Super-slim 2x1 colour LED panel that is fast and easy to use Pros: Comes with lots of accessories Cons: Doesn’t take barn doors

of light. Nanlite even throws in an eggcrate grid to make the light more directional but still soft. That’s a lot of kit for your cash – and it’s all portable and quick to set up. You can easily be up and running in less than a minute. Power is supplied via the included mains cable, but the pack includes V-Mount plates so you can use your own batteries. Turn the light on and select the mode, either setting a colour temperature for CCT white light or any colour you like using the HSI mode. Or dial in one of 151 gels to match the colour. It’s easy to use, and only gets a bit more complicated if you want to use one of the 15 built-in SFX patterns. If you’ve used tech like this before, it’s all easy. Despite the panel being so thin, the power output is impressive as it pumps out up to 12,830 lux at 1m/3.3ft. Colour settings drop the output, as do using some of the modifiers, but with so much power on tap, it’s not really an issue. You’re more likely to be dialling it down –which is equally as simple, dropping to as low as 1%.
