going to get beautiful focus pulls with extremely shallow depth-of-field. Footage is bright and saturated, as is the style of many consumer cameras. There is an HLG setting for HDR plus a D-Log M flat look that squeezes in more dynamic range for tweaking in post. And as there is 10-bit colour, it grades well to match most cameras you might operate. Another huge improvement on the Pocket 3 is that the one-inch screen of the older model has been replaced by a two-inch touchscreen that’s brighter and has higher resolution. The tiny screen of the older model is a pain as it’s so small despite being required to make setting changes. The new screen is hardly huge, but a massive improvement that makes a big difference in both monitoring and navigating menus, as well as more useful for typical adult-sized fingers.
The best way to use the Pocket 2 was to plug it into a smartphone with one of the included connectors – but this made it far clunkier. The larger screen on the Pocket 3 means this isn’t needed any more. It does mean the unit’s size and weight has gone up, but it’s still tiny and light. The Pocket 3 has a wider ISO range, higher 130Mbps bit rate, 10-bit 4:2:0 colour sampling in H.265 and a much larger 1300mAh Lipo battery that lasts longer and charges faster. And the AF is far better as it is a phase detection system with touch-to-focus that also offers face and subject tracking. Use the camera for streaming, if you like. Even the case is much better, as it takes the gimbal camera and has space for magnetic ND or wide-angle filters. These magnet onto the front of the lens, and with a standard view of a 20mm lens, the wide angle gives
a much-needed wider view of 0.75x, equivalent to 15mm. If a magnetic attachment is left on the lens, the camera will recognise this and alter the angle of the gimbal when turned off to allow it to fit in the case. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has a tiny internal microphone, but you can’t plug in a better mic without a USB-C adapter. That’s where the Mic 2 comes in as it wirelessly sends its audio signal back to the camera – this makes it a must-have. Even the carry case has a special cut-out to keep a single Mic 2 transmitter in. That’s clever thinking and a testament to the engineering that’s gone into this pocket marvel.
