Tube lights – either round or flat – offer portable, relatively inexpensive methods of adding light to a film set. From single-colour tubes to units with pixel arrays inside, there’s a big choice at different prices. Aputure’s Infinibars are far more than tube lights. These flat-panel- style units have 48 different pixels in lots of different colour modes, all while staying true to the accurate 96 CRI and 98 TLCI. They come in one-, two- and four-foot lengths complete with fitted case, mains power block and two different mounting options. As the Infinibars are flat rather than round, they are made to give a different look that’s consistent right across the light. Tubular lights can be difficult to rig up, which is why the Infinibar has a mounting system that means several can be joined together to create complicated shapes. Each bar has its own lithium battery that operates at 100% brightness for 100 minutes, but can be mains powered. The USB-C connection on the back of the lights isn’t for power; the battery must be charged by the AC adapter. An RGBWW chipset produces colour temperature light from 2000 to 10,000K with full G/M adjustment – and advanced hue, saturation and intensity controls provide a wide gamut of precise, accurate colours. padded carry case. The £2095/$1999 60XR has the same flight case as the older 60X, which features foam cut- outs, swivel casters, recessed hand grips, wheel plates for stacking and additional accessories. Zhiyun’s Fiveray F100 RGB LED stick mixes consumer styling and pricing with more high-end light performance. Weighing just 950g, the F100 is designed for one-handed control although can be mounted on a light stand with the standard 1/4in-20 thread at the base. It needs this, as the rounded bottom means it’s difficult to stand up on its own. For just £262/$299, the combo kit includes a two-leaf barn door, a diffuser that stretches over the top to make a small softbox, a grid to direct the light and a decent carrying case. There’s a USB-C lead to charge the light’s internal batteries. Six built-in 2600mAh cells provide over an hour of runtime at 50% power, but pay a little extra and buy a mains adapter to power it in-studio. Purchase the light in either black or white, which might be important if you want to use it in the shot or as a practical. Zhiyun claims that the F100 can output 20,708 lux at its 100W maximum power from a metre away. That’s with the colour temperature set to provide maximum power at around 4000K. The CRI reaches 96+ and TLCI 97+ to guarantee fidelity. The £189/$199 Zhiyun Fiveray V60 light wand is quite similar to the more powerful F100, but smaller and lighter. A small display screen allows you to change settings. It has a colour temperature range of 2700 to 6500K, a TLCI of ≥98 and CRI of ≥96, plus built-in effects such as SOS, TV, broken light bulb, candle and fire. Music mode syncs with the beat for the full disco effect.

In comparison, the latest Nanlite Pavotube II XR LED pixel tubes now have built-in CRMX, which allows wireless control of animated pixel effects, bicolour and RGB hues, with the ability to be bright enough for a key light or dim enough to work as a practical in-frame light.
