India has always been one of the world’s great content production powerhouses. One might think the boom in streaming services – bringing in even more international content to the country – would have a negative effect on domestic production. But Netflix and Amazon Prime discovered original local content was one of their biggest drivers of growth. In addition to domestic OTT services creating more content, the big international players have also been investing heavily. For 2021, a total of 52% of investment in Indian originals came from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video alone. BOLLYWOOD BECOMES BOLLYVOD

CINEMA ADMISSIONS IN INDIA, 2017-23

While the cinema industry globally has been in decline for some time, theatrical viewing is still strong in India. The Omdia report does note the unsurprising collapse of cinemagoing in 2020, but predicts that numbers will eventually climb back to pre-pandemic levels. This is in sharp contrast to the west, where cinemas may be headed for a catastrophic collapse. It’s also worth noting that Omdia’s report was collated before the sudden Covid-19 surge in India in spring, which will certainly affect predicted numbers for 2021.
