DISNEY+ HOTSTAR EQUALS MARKET DOMINANCE
The biggest contributor to subscription growth in India is Disney+ Hotstar. The subscriber base tripled from April 2020 (when Disney+ launched) to the end of the year. But Disney+ Hotstar isn’t just another streaming service; Hotstar is an Indian VOD operation owned by media conglomerate Star India, acquired by
Disney in its purchase of previous Star India owner, 21st Century Fox, at the beginning of 2020. Hotstar already offered access to top Indian and international cricket content, as well as popular foreign offerings, like Game of Thrones . With the hit Disney+ service bundled alongside Hotstar, the combo is unbeatable.
Trailing behind Disney+ Hotstar is Eros Now, a VOD service launched in 2012 by long-time Indian film distributor Eros International. Eros Now started making original content in 2018. Surprisingly, Prime Video beat Netflix in India, perhaps due to the greater proportion of Indian content in the Prime catalogue.

INDIA, MONTHLY VIDEO USERS BY DEVICE TYPE
The cliche of lounging on the sofa watching Netflix on your TV is not the norm globally. For most of the world, the mobile phone is the primary conduit through which people receive media. Only 63.9% of Indian households own a TV set, compared to 87.6% in China and 92.3% in Indonesia.
