New figures show a boom in streaming services in India, but Netflix isn’t the winner... FROM INDIA A VIEW

ideo streaming is being universally adopted worldwide. Unsurprisingly, 2020 saw a spike in uptake, as locked-down viewers

subscribed to new services and switched on TVs to turn off their real-life woes. In its Online Video Market and Consumer Trends Report, published in March, research company Omdia presents a snapshot of streaming in one of the world’s great content producers – and markets – India. It contains fascinating insights` into how OTT and VOD are developing in the country, and how Indian content might weather the Covid-19 storm. The report was authored by Omdia principal analyst for TV and online video, Constantinos Papavassilopoulos, along with Omdia senior analyst for TV and online video, Jun Wen Woo, and senior analyst for advertising, TV and online video, Kia Ling Teoh. In the months following the report’s release, there was a catastrophic spike in Covid-19 cases in India. Author Papavassilopoulos told FEED the new outbreak will certainly have an effect on cinema numbers, but said: “OTT video is very well positioned now in India to survive the blow – and content producers are much better prepared this time.”
