“I love to use greenery by filling any gaps with winter herbs”

At Neptune, meanwhile, it’s all about contrasts – a rich, forest-green armchair against a period fireplace, festive greenery along a bare, wood staircase and soft throws offset against the gleam of mirror glass and metallics. Sometimes a pop of rich colour works beautifully to bring a quiet luxe mood. Sofa.com’s claret velvet Humphrey sofa, for instance, is glamorous yet inviting, while Pooky’s elegant Starsky chandelier, made with recycled glass, brings wow factor to any space. John Lewis’s Campfire trend also channels this look, with its warming palette of ambers, coppers and deep oranges, paired with acorns, owls and woodland creatures for a rich, natural feel. Finally, when it comes to the focus of the big day – the Christmas meal – make sure you spend a little time curating your table to give a sense of importance to proceedings. French Connection’s modern approach to festive dining includes tactile crockery, lustre bowls and luxe glassware in green, rose and blue. Offering more of a traditional feel, Burleigh Pottery – which has been producing Burleigh ware at the Middleport Pottery since 1889 – suggests opting for simplicity in order to avoid overcomplicating things.

Jemma Baskeyfield, company historian, says: “At Christmas, we may love the idea of dressing the festive table to perfection, but often we are so busy with everything else it can be a struggle to achieve this. What I often do is spend some time dressing the ‘snack table’. I use lots of different size bowls in different colours, shapes and sizes. Creating an eclectic mix that draws everyone in and buys me plenty of time to complete the main feature! For my Christmas table, I love to use greenery by filling any gaps with pots of winter herbs – sage, rosemary and thyme. They also nicely scent the scene, too.”
