BRIEFINGS INDUSTRY

[ ALL CHANGE ] THREE MAJOR BRAND BUYOUTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

First up in a trio of interesting recent acquisitions is the news that Thomas Riedel, founder and owner of the Riedel Group and Riedel Communications, has acquired ARRI – maker, of course, of market-leading cine cams and lighting. It’s an interesting move for Riedel, whose focus so far has been on delivering infrastructure solutions across broadcast, live events and sports productions. By combining their respective technologies, the press release reads, the companies plan to “develop integrated solutions that open new creative and technical possibilities for customers.” “My entrepreneurial path has been tied to ARRI for years,” said Thomas Riedel. “This acquisition represents the most significant personal milestone of my career so far. I have great respect for this exceptional brand, its outstanding products and its strong team. At the same time, I see tremendous potential and am confident that, together, we can position ARRI for long-term stability and future success.” 1. ARRI ACQUIRED BY RIEDEL

2. ATOMOS PURCHASES FLANDERS SCIENTIFIC Also on our radar this issue is the acquisition of Flanders Scientific (FSI), one of the most respected names in pro reference monitoring, by Atomos – known for its own camera monitoring solutions, including the Ninja series.

3. RD GROUP TAKES ON VMI VMI.TV, a lens and lighting rental house with a nearly 50-year history, has been purchased by RD Group. “VMI isn’t just a rental house, it’s a piece of our industry’s infrastructure. We’re proud to be the ones bringing it back, and we intend to do it properly,” said CEO Ryan Dean.

[ TO INFINITY AND BEYOND ] A NEW GAME CHANGER FROM DISNEY? D isney used CinemaCon to announce the launch of Infinity

It’s an interesting move that sees Disney attempting to wrest greater control of the premium cinema landscape and guarantee its big releases get the grand theatrical presentation that they’re made for (unlike Avengers: Doomsday , which lost IMAX exclusivity to Dune 3 ). It also doubles down on the studio’s ongoing theatrical push. You can experience it for yourself come September with the Infinity Vision-certified rerelease of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame .

Vision – its IMAX-rivalling new certification for premium large

format (PLF) cinemas. According to the brand: “Infinity Vision will signify to audiences which auditoriums offer the biggest, brightest and most immersive experiences. It sets a new benchmark for theatrical presentation, certifying auditoriums which meet rigorous technical standards.” These standards include extra large screens for maximum scale, laser projection for superior brightness and clarity, and premium audio formats for fully immersive sound.
