FEED Issue 07

PETER WHITE, IABM: In IABM’s case it is the combination of actionable business and market intelligence we produce; the platforms and events for collaboration between our members and their customers; a wide range of training courses to enable members to keep abreast of new technologies and business methods; partnerships with major trade shows to help members get better value from their marketing budgets; and representation in industry standards bodies. 61 ROUND TABLE Professional Organisations

FEED: What qualities do trade organisations possess that make them uniquely useful? BARBARA LANGE, SMPTE: Among SMPTE’s contributions to the industry is our work in setting industry standards, and we believe this is a critical function of the Society. A baseline of interoperable standards is essential for the growth of any industry. With this foundation, organisations can innovate on product features knowing that standards will preserve interoperability. Further groups including SMPTE will curate this standards development work for perpetuity. No matter which direction the market goes, SMPTE will continue to be the reliable source for technical knowledge. As the industry shifts and grows, professional groups are an essential and necessary part of the marketplace.

MARK HARRISON, DPP: I think it’s important to recognise that there are many, many things that trade and industry organisations can do and we shouldn’t say that there should be a single thing. I can see there is still a benefit for organisations that focus on the needs of a particular sector or who have specific areas of focus, like standards. As it happens, the DPP doesn’t see itself as a trade body, we’re very much an industry organisation. We don’t see ourselves representing any particular constituency. We see ourselves as a facility for the industry to work together across the boundaries. And I think that is now a very valuable offer, to have an organisation that enables its members to have facilitated encounters with parts of the ecosystem that they might normally find difficult to access.
