THE KIT DAVEOWNS
FUJIFILM X-S10 The FUJIFILM X-S10 marked the beginning of a new look for its X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor cameras. Fujifilm’s approach is to target different users with varying designs, but using the same imaging technologies – and, of course, they all share the same X Series lens mount. The X-H models are aimed at the still/movie hybrid shooter; the X-E is a compact series; the X-Pro is designed to attract rangefinder users; and the X-T has that classic mix of physical and virtual controls for those switching from DSLRs. The X-S10 is a portable, lightweight camera, yet fully featured. The headlines include FUJIFILM’s 26.1 megapixel APS-C CMOS 4 sensor, in-body image stabilisation, and a versatile vari-angle touchscreen that can be flipped out 180°. A compelling solution for image makers.

XF16-80MM F/4 R OIS WR A recent and very welcome addition to FUJIFILM X Series is this 5x zoom that covers the most used range of focal lengths – equivalent to 24mm to 120mm in the 35mm format. Its compact body weighs 440g, making it a perfect walkaround lens. Plus, it has a built-in Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS), giving up to 6EV benefit. High optical quality is assured, thanks to the advanced design featuring 16 lens elements – of which three are aspherical and one ED aspherical. The result is excellent image quality across the frame. Autofocusing is handled by a stepping motor for fast and accurate operation. There’s a minimum focusing distance of just 35cm over the whole zoom range.

XF10-24MM F/4 R OIS WR FUJIFILM’s XF10-24mm R OIS was very popular, so the manufacturer had a challenge on its hands when upgrading. But mission accomplished, as the the XF10-24mm f/4 R OIS WR is a significant step on from its predecessor. Its improved body houses an enhanced optical construction, featuring 14 elements, with four aspherical and four extra-low dispersion elements. Reliability is aided by an improved OIS system.
exposure mode. If I am going to get it wrong, I’d much rather it be my fault. Similarly, if I get it right, it’s strictly down to me. I sometimes think of trading in the X-S10 for an X-T4, but then ask myself, ‘why?’ I love the X-T4’s looks, but that is the only thing drawing me in. The X-S10 does everything well, especially for my needs. It might be small, but it’s mighty, and it doesn’t attract attention when I am out shooting.
I always shoot Raw and process images in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I sometimes overprocess my images, but it’s a recognisable style. I treat my shots like an artist might. They create pictures by working and working on them. I do the same. I tried the camera’s Film Simulation modes. While they are good, I don’t like giving away that much control. It is the same reason I shoot with the X-S10 in manual
