MANY YEARS OF develoment and emerging technologies have created a space where superzooms have really found their feet in recent years – and lenses like Tamron’s 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD are the reason why. This optic combines freedom of framing with great image quality, all in a lightweight package. Voted best superzoom lens by readers, it’s a lens that’s pretty much ready for anything. The central appeal of a superzoom is that it gives photographers masses of options in a single package. For that reason, these lenses are often called ‘all-in-ones’ or ‘travel zooms’, as they can tackle most subjects without needing to change lenses. With a wide end of 28mm and a longest setting of 200mm, the 28- 200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD certainly fits the bill here, taking in vistas, as well as frame-filling close-ups.

What’s more, it does all this at apertures faster than its rivals. Settings of f/2.8 at the wide end and f/5.6 compare to others with ranges of f/4 to f/6.3. These wide settings let you keep shutter speeds up for sharper shots, ISOs lower for cleaner images or a combination of both. Image quality is also top notch, with a construction of 18 elements in 14 groups, including low dispersion and extra-low dispersion glass that defeat chromatic aberrations and deliver edge-to-edge sharpness across the frame. Add in Tamron’s proprietary Broad-Band Anti- Reflection coating, which dramatically reduces ghosting and flaring, and results are stunning in this category. Another trick up the 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD’s sleeve is its close focusing ability. At 28mm, users can get as close as 19cm, giving a

reproduction ratio of 1:3.1 – near to macro level. At 200mm, the 80cm distance gives 1:3.8, for sumptuous detail. It’s no slouch in AF speed, which is important if your day’s shooting turns to action. The Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive (RXD) provides near silent focusing.
