DJI RONIN 4D GE AR RE V I EW.

GENERATION Z HEAD-TURNER

The latest breed of filmmakers should take a look at this unique four-axis, two-in-one camera and stabiliser

Specification

T here is only one camera on the market that has a four- axis stabilisation system for Steadicam-like, silky- smooth moves. That turns manual-focus cine primes into full autofocus lenses, thanks to a laser rangefinder system. And can shift itself to track moving subjects, and record ProRes Raw files internally to memory cards. Only one that has a built-in video transmission system, so you can control all settings from miles away. And there is a single cinema camera that comes with a choice of lens mounts, including the popular Sony E-mount – allowing you to change the full-frame, dual ISO sensor module from 6K to 8K.

Incredibly, for such a huge list of technologically advanced firsts, these are all in a single camera – the DJI Ronin 4D. It’s the sort of lateral thinking that could only come from this company, unhindered by the decades-old views and established practices of traditional manufacturers. You only have to look at the menu system that has all the pro features and settings you’d want, but is set up in a logical way – rather than a litany of subfolders to trawl through to make changes. It’s DJI’s experience with consumer drones and gimbals that has led to this way of considering what a high-level cinema camera is, and how simple it should be to control.
