SAVOUR & S I P

Well-known and beloved for its sumptuous Portuguese custard tarts, Norfolk Street Bakery is a firm Edition favourite, offering a combination of classic staples and traditional Portuguese recipes, which owner Adilia Frazao picked up from her grandmother when she was growing up. At the Station Road branch, take a seat in a charming room at the back of the bakery for a bite to eat, with plenty of homemade sandwiches, sausage rolls and soups to choose from. For something a little sweeter, take your pick from a selection of cakes, biscuits and brownies. A TASTE OF PORTUGAL

At Gail’s, you’ll find a wide range of breads, including unusual dough mixes such as potato and rosemary sourdough, as well as loaves with honey, almond and walnut. The sweet treats are especially enticing, with soft madeleines, pecan and cinnamon crumb cake, honey cakes and blueberry brioches. For a tasty twist on brunch, try the baked eggs with sourdough soldiers, served with avocado or bacon. Gail’s keeps waste to a minimum, donating surplus products to local charities and organisations at the end of each day. They even make products from leftover ingredients and unsold produce; for example, their wasteless sourdough is made with porridge from the previous day’s unsold bread! CULT FAVOURITES

A family-run artisan bakery on Hills Road, The Cambridge Oven has its origins firmly rooted in tradition. Owner Jolita’s mother was a farmer, while her grandmother was a classically trained baker – a heritage that inspired Jolita to train at the School of Artisan Food and set up her very own bakery. The Cambridge Oven uses locally sourced, organic ingredients – adding seeds, nuts and fresh herbs to the dough for added flavour and nutritional benefits. For a sugar hit, there’s a selection of croissants, brioches, sweet tarts and meringues to get the mouth watering! A bun in the oven
