DEFINITION’S CAMERA LISTINGS
The story of The Stranger lends itself well to Quibi’s premise, which is that you can watch shows on your phone either vertically or horizontally. DOP Paul Yee says: “In pre-production, we tested shooting in portrait against landscape and it became apparent to us what does and doesn’t work. A two shot, for example, can be challenging in portrait – as can a scene with multiple people ping-ponging dialogue at the same time. But outside of that, we came to realise that simple lateral actions, such as a character walking across a frame, felt better than panning and scanning with that character, as you would in landscape. This drove us to develop a list of rules and principles for shooting in portrait.” The series was shot in 6K on a Sony Venice with Panavision Primo 70s. A Sony Rialto was also used to get the camera into the show’s tighter spaces. Yee explains: “Even though it was a bit of a task to switch to Rialto mode, it was important for us, as we were shooting in a car so much. In particular, because we did all of the car scenes practically, on a real road, rather than in a studio, it helped to reduce the amount of inherent bounce a camera has by having a smaller body mounted on.” NEW RULES FOR FRAMING SONY VENICE BASED ON:
