Vanguard announces tripods ideal for travel
enlarging solutions, plus medium and large format film cameras. These stands appeared busy for the whole show. Anyway, if you want to attend TPS next year, the show is on 17-20 September 2022. Autumn’s here and it’s time to get the thermals out. Actually, I’ve had mine ready since August, when summer came to an early, unseasonal end – which was very disappointing. I was just beginning to enjoy insect photography and the weather didn’t help. Although, I managed a few sessions with damselflies and dragonflies. But now it’s time to focus on other opportunities. I’m hoping to make the most of the season’s colours. Longer term, I’m thinking of Victorian viaducts as a project. There are many, so I need to funnel this down and do some research – but I could pick 50 and record those for posterity, perhaps shooting on film. Don’t know yet, but if anyone has any thoughts, please feel free to get in touch. See you again next month, when the feature-packed double issue is out from 27 November.

WELL, DID YOU make it to the NEC for The Photography Show? I was there three days in all: one for me, and two as editor of the mag. Thanks to everyone who stopped me to say hello. The Sunday seemed quiet, but the Monday and Tuesday were almost as busy as normal. Although, I don’t think there were as many bulging carrier bags as usual. Stock probably wasn’t there to be bought, and we do know that the demand for some significant new cameras and lenses is outstripping supply. But it wasn’t just new tech that was suffering, as I heard one tripod brand had sold their stock in the first two days. I really enjoyed the show. I got to play with the Canon EOS R3 (read what I thought on page 40) and spent a few quid, too. I’d been thinking of digitally photographing some of my favourite film negatives and slides recently, and saw accessories from pixl-latr to help. I bought a simple multi-format film holder, a diffuser and non-slip mat. I’ve finished a few copies – and the kit does what I want. The analogue corner was one of the show’s most interesting areas, with fascinating developing and

Upgrade your tripod with Vanguard The VEO MT-12 Multi-Mount and Horizontal Arm delivers a versatile solution for upgrading your existing tripod Vanguard recognises that photographers don’t want to replace their perfectly good tripod every time a new one gets released, because – let’s face it – it would be impossible to keep up! Tasty fare at Bristol Enjoy this year’s Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year exhibition at the RPS in Bristol The Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year is the world’s leading award for food photography and film. This year, its exhibition will be hosted by The Royal Photographic Society at its base in Bristol. The exhibition features over 170 images that fall into 25 imaginative categories, such as Politics of Food or Marks & Spencer Food Portraiture. The exhibition aims to put a spotlight on unique stories about food, showing the variety of culinary cultures throughout the world.

Manfrotto on the MOVE Manfrotto Move products boast flexible configurations, that increase on-set dynamic creators Manfrotto has announced three new modular designs, that promote smooth workflows in fast-paced creative environments. The Move Quick Release (QR) system allows operators to switch between tripods, motion-control gear and stabilisers in a matter efficiency and can empower of seconds. Users can create a universal connector type using a uniform Base and Plate set-up – across all camera systems and their various supports. This will allow operators to switch between equipment, without having to change plates. Designed with a universal 3/8in thread connector and a 1/4in adapter, Move’s QR system is compatible with most camera equipment and supports. The Move Quick Release catcher sells for £91.95, the Quick Release base (MVAQR) is £82.95, with the plate £22.95. The Gim-Pod is a lightweight solution that enables you to transition to a tripod using a Gimboom, without detaching the camera rig. Nikon Photo Contest 2020- 2021 winners revealed

Founded more than 50 years ago, the Nikon Photo Contest is one of the world’s largest photography competitions. The 2020-2021 version attracted 65,062 submissions from over 150 countries and regions. The winners of the Grand Prize awards for each competition category were selected from the Excellence Award-winning works. The photo competition Grand Prize went to an image from the Open Category called Radiance, by Amin Nazari from the Islamic Republic of Iran, depicting an elderly person receiving treatment for Covid-19 in an Iranian hospital. Lead judge Neville Brody observed that many of the entries provided

In contrast, a multi-piece picture is much more understated and delicate. The image is divided into individual sections, creating an artistic feel. This makes its appearance more subtle, conveying lightness on the walls. Not all images are suitable for this, but the right photograph can result in a very special design. Multi-piece pictures put a different emphasis on the composition of a picture, in no small part due to the contrasting division of the image. The photo is cut precisely, so that no part of the work is lost. Triptych | the classic among multi-part images Creating a photograph as a multi-piece work in three segments of equal size conveys a completely new impression. The image is clearly structured, yet remains one whole. Especially for landscape shots and close-ups, the distance left between the triptych provides additional tension within the image composition (e.g. a timeless multi-part work on Alu-Dibond for indoor and outdoor use, highly durable).

Windsor PS THE NEW SEASON is underway at the Windsor PS. “The pandemic did not stop members having an enjoyable time, with a varied programme on Zoom last season,” reports club chairman Denis Wesson. “Now that restrictions have eased, we can meet physically again. It was great to see people in the same room. In fact, we had a strong start with six new members – all younger than me! I think the pandemic has brought people back to our hobby. That said, some regular members are staying away because they have vulnerable partners, so we have Zoom meetings planned to keep them involved. “During our first meeting, The Photographer of the Year Competition 2020/21 winner was revealed. It was won by Neil Mountford with his image Into the Light, (right). We are looking forward to an evening with Eddie Hyde on 29 November, which will be Tips & Tricks in Lightroom and Photoshop.” WPS meets every Monday evening at The Old Court, St Leonards Road, Windsor, SL4 3BL at 7.45pm. WEST HADDON PHOTO Club is a small Northamptonshire group that meets every month, except August. “We relied on Zoom meetings to keep going through the lockdowns. The club benefitted from talks by a range of photographers who we would not normally be able to entertain,” says committee member Adrian Chandler. “Our main event this year was the photo show held on 18-19 September. There were no categories or prizes, just sections of images. We encouraged entries from all abilities. Visitors were able to browse the prints displayed in West Haddon’s All Saints’ church, then take a pew to watch the digital entries.
Viewfinder PS Viewfinder Photographic Society’s (VPS) annual show takes place at Skidby Village Hall and moves to Lockington Village Hall, 14 Chapel Street, Lockington, Driffield YO25 9SN on 15-17 October, 10am-4pm. David Marshall, VPS chairman, said: “We can’t wait to welcome visitors to our exhibition, after the disappointment of having to cancel last year. We’ve worked closely with the Village Hall Committee to ensure that everyone will feel safe. Figures show that visitor numbers have steadily increased over the years – and the exhibition has established itself as a popular event. Ware & District PS DURING THE PANDEMIC, the society convened weekly via Zoom, but in- person meetings have started again on Wednesday evenings 8-10pm at Thundridge Village Hall, Cambridge Road, Thundridge, Herts SG12 0TU. The new season sees a varied programme of speakers, members evenings and competitions. Prospective new members can attend free for three weeks. Experienced members are always there to help. The society’s annual exhibition is planned to take place on 20 November, 10am-6pm at Thundridge Village Hall, and there will be around 100 prints on display, together with a continuous digital show.
