BUYERS’ GUIDE
PELI 1535 AIR WITH DIVIDERS £412/$390 peliproducts.co.uk Peli cases are known all over the world for providing the ultimate protection for your kit. They are virtually unbreakable, watertight, airtight, dustproof, chemical resistant and corrosion proof, as well as extremely strong and durable. As the gold standard of protective cases, they are widely used by military and government groups that need to keep kit safe. The 1535 Air is typical of the lighter range and features a neoprene o-ring to seal it from the elements. It also includes an automatic purge valve for quick equalisation after changes in atmospheric pressure. There are double ABS latches that seal securely and padlock protectors for additional security. This 1535 comes with padded inserts or the Trekpak divider system, which is both light yet strong. A unique pin system allows for flexible adjustment of the dividers as the contents of the case change. Other internal options are available such as foam, so you can customise your case to your needs. These cases last for decades and never go out of fashion.
SHIMODA DV ROLLER £315/$272 shimodadesigns.com
TENBA CINELUXE V2 £TBC/$TBC uk.tenba.com
Shimoda might not be the best-known brand yet, but its DV Roller demonstrates the company makes well-designed kit. It is built to accommodate large cinema cameras as well as mirrorless cameras with large lenses. The DV Roller features 100mm all- terrain wheels, ideal for pulling it over rough ground. There is a wide, doctor- bag-style opening and a heavy-duty extending handle. It’s also crafted with Shimoda’s premium materials and build quality, and shares the same dimensions as the Shimoda Action X70 backpack. This means you can quickly transfer your gear from roller to backpack by removing the DV core unit from one case and dropping it into the other. Each side of the bag features a full- length zippered pocket. One side is fitted with a travel document and phone sleeve, while the other side fits larger accessories such as a water bottle. Both sides include a compression strap, allowing you to hold a medium-sized tripod if needed. The teal interior looks cool, too, and might even match the grade on your films!
Tenba’s original Cineluxe collection broke new ground as it was specifically designed for modern filmmakers. From rolling cases to backpacks, many have a unique doctor-bag-style top opening, allowing for fast and easy access to gear. It also means fully rigged-up cameras can be lowered inside without the need for unbolting all the ancillaries. But Tenba hasn’t been resting on its laurels, as the new Cineluxe V2 range is now available – with the top-opening design retained. The Shoulder Bag and Backpack 16 and 21, as well as the Roller 21, are all airline-legal for carry-on. Each bag comes with a hidden Airtag tile sleeve, while soft padded wraps and zippered pouches protect other kit. A full-length exterior pocket holds shotgun mics and batteries, while the interior dividers are reinforced with bendable aluminium. Molle straps allow extra tools to be attached to the outside, and a trolley strap slides over the handle of a rolling case. The range is made from water-repellent 1680D nylon and includes a rain cover.
Pros: The best protection Cons: Signals to others there is expensive gear inside
Pros: Finally a bag with big wheels Cons: Not the most famous brand
