CINEMA GLASS
SIRUI
Sirui continues to pioneer affordable lenses for a wide variety of cameras and has anamorphic versions as well as fast primes. The
brand started off with lenses for Micro Four Thirds cameras, and continues to offer a range that fits the quarter-size sensors. There’s the Sirui Mars anamorphic set of 24, 35, 50 and 75mm lenses in a fitted Peli case. For cameras with a larger Super 35 sensor, anamorphic lenses are available in 24, 35, 50 and 75mm lenses in E mount, L-mount, RF, Micro Four Thirds or FZ. These will fit onto full-frame cameras, but must be set to Super 35 crop mode as the image circle of the lens is just not big enough. These optics give a 1.33x ratio for a 2.4:1 aspect ratio in 16x9. Sirui’s expansion into the full-frame anamorphic market means a range of physically larger and more expensive glass. This includes the Venus 50mm T2.9 1.6x lens as well as 35, 75, 100 and 135mm, all at T2.9. The brand now
also has a 28-85mm T3.2 full-frame spherical cine zoom lens to fit Canon EF and PL mounts. The new cine lens range also includes the macro Jupiter 24, 35 and 50mm options as well as a 24mm T1.2 Super 35 Night Walker prime. store.sirui.com
LAOWA
The Laowa Proteus Flex 2X anamorphic series, made by Venus Optics, is unique as it is a set of anamorphic cine lenses where you can change the look of the flare. Each lens comes with a main body and four flare modules – including amber, silver, blue and clear versions – to change the colour of the horizontal flares typical of anamorphic glass. The clear version actually reduces flaring and reflections too. A new lens coating effectively suppresses horizontal streaks, even when shooting against strong sunlight. The Proteus Flex series comes in 28, 35, 45, 60, 85 and 100mm versions with T2 maximum apertures, which are designed for organic fall-off. The lenses give the classic widescreen anamorphic character, but with a modern design. The flare modules can be easily installed and screw-locked into the main Proteus Flex body, and no further optical calibration is required after the swap. The lenses cost £9869/$9999 each or £24,669/$24,999 for a three-lens set of either 28, 45 and 85mm or 35, 60 and 100mm. For a more conventional Super 35 anamorphic, the Nanomorph 60mm prime offers 1.5x macro capability to get you right up close to the subject – just 24cm/9.45in away. Costing £2029/$1999, it can be ordered with either blue, amber or silver flaring. For full-frame use, the Laowa 1.4x Full Frame Expander makes it the equivalent of an 84mm full-frame 0.5x macro anamorphic, which retains its original close focus. laowacine.com
The Viltrox lenses aren’t designed to be super-sharp, but offer a filmic, softer image with a pleasing skin tone and colour reproduction. They give an almost retro look. The lenses also offer a consistent tone in all focal lengths and virtually no focus breathing. They all produce the trademark oval bokeh and horizontal blue flare that’s a trademark of anamorphic glass. All the lenses have a consistent 95mm front diameter and a focus throw of 290° precise control. Each one also comes in a hard case with a lens support bracket and rear shims to get a precise fit.
“The Viltrox lenses aren’t designed to be super-sharp, but offer a filmic, softer image for pleasing skin tone” The lens construction is complex, with the 25mm having the most advanced: 22 elements in 18 groups. viltrox.com
